When you come to the Netherlands to work, you naturally want your salary to be paid safely. For this, you need a Dutch bank account. But how does that work when you’ve just arrived? Can you open one just like that? And what if you don’t have a permanent address yet? In this blog, we explain what you need, what to look out for, and how Charlie works helps you with this.
Why a Dutch Bank Account is Important
If you work through Charlie works, you’ll receive your salary weekly. This is only possible if you have a valid Dutch bank account number. With such an account, you can also:
- Have your rent and health insurance paid automatically;
- Make online purchases or transfer money;
- Withdraw money in shops or at stations.
A Dutch account is therefore not only convenient, it’s essential if you work and live here for an extended period.
Can You as a Migrant Worker just Open an Account?
Yes, but it’s not equally easy everywhere. Some banks have strict requirements, especially if you’ve only been in the Netherlands for a short time. Think of:
- A valid ID (passport or ID card);
- Phone number;
- Email address;
- A citizen service number (BSN) (not for Bunq and Revolut);
- A postal address.
Of course, we’ll help you apply for a BSN number if you don’t have one yet.
Where Can You Go?
There are several banks in the Netherlands where you as a migrant worker can open an account. Some examples:
- Bunq – online bank that works quickly and fully digitally;
- Revolut or N26 – international digital banks, but less common for salary payments in the Netherlands.
- ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO – traditional banks with physical branches, but often stricter requirements;
Salary payments by Charlie works are made to a Dutch bank account. It’s wise to open a Dutch account as soon as you start working.
How Long Does it Take to Open an Account?
With digital banks, it can often be arranged within one or two days. You upload your documents, go through an identity check, and receive your debit card by mail. With traditional banks, it might take a bit longer, especially if you need to come in for an appointment.
If you work through Charlie works, we prefer to start this process as soon as possible. Often, we can help you choose the right bank and schedule the registration before your first working day.
