The short answer is: no, it is not always necessary. Although English is used in many workplaces, there are plenty of roles where you can start without English language skills.

At Charlie works, we work daily with international employees from various countries. We see that motivation, work ethic, and reliability are often more important than speaking English. In this blog, we explain the available opportunities and what you should take into account.

Is English mandatory for working in the Netherlands?

There is no general rule stating that you must speak English to be allowed to work in the Netherlands. Language requirements vary by position, company, and sector.

In some professions, communication is a key part of the job. Consider, for example, roles with significant customer contact or administrative tasks. In other sectors, the emphasis is primarily on practical tasks, and language is less important.

Employers therefore often look at what a person needs to do during work and what communication is required for those tasks.

In which sectors can you often work without English?

Within sectors such as logistics, production, and horticulture, there are regularly positions available where English is not a strict requirement. International teams work on many shop floors where colleagues speak different languages. Tasks are often explained using clear instructions, examples, or guidance from colleagues. This allows employees to start quickly, even if they speak little or no English.

This does not mean that communication plays no role at all. It remains important to understand safety instructions and basic agreements. Employers therefore often provide extra guidance when necessary.

Why motivation can be more important

Many employers look beyond just language skills. They seek employees who are motivated, arrive on time, and take their work seriously. Someone who is eager to work and willing to learn often has more opportunities than someone with perfect language skills but little commitment. Therefore, during interviews, work ethic, availability, and reliability are often assessed. For roles in logistics and production, these are qualities that employers value highly.

Learning the language on the job

Even if you start without English, it does not mean it will always stay that way. Many international employees learn new words and expressions along the way through daily contact with colleagues. Over time, people understand more and more of the conversations on the work floor. Some also learn a bit of Dutch. This often happens naturally because they come into contact with the language daily. You can also learn different languages quickly via tools such as Duolingo.

The advantage of this is that communication becomes increasingly easier and more opportunities arise within a company. Although language can sometimes be an advantage, many employers primarily look at your motivation and work ethic. Are you willing to learn, do you work accurately, and do you keep your appointments? Then there are often more possibilities than you think. Language skills can be developed along the way, but a good attitude is something you bring with you from day one.

Safety remains paramount

In every workplace, safety comes first. Therefore, it is important that employees understand safety instructions, regardless of which language they speak. Many companies use pictograms, demonstrations, and clear explanations to ensure that everyone can work safely. Additionally, new employees often receive extra guidance during their first working days. When safety is well explained and monitored, employees can work successfully even without extensive language skills.

How Does Charlie works Help?

At Charlie works, we look at more than just language. We assess every candidate based on experience, motivation, and personal qualities. As a result, people who do not speak English can also find opportunities in the Dutch labor market.

Furthermore, we guide employees during their start and assist with questions about living and working in the Netherlands. This way, we ensure you start a new job well-prepared.

Working without English is possible

Not speaking English does not automatically mean you cannot find work in the Netherlands. In sectors such as logistics, production, and horticulture, there are regular opportunities for motivated employees.

Of course, learning English or Dutch can offer benefits in the long run, but it does not have to be a prerequisite to start. With the right attitude, guidance, and motivation, there are plenty of opportunities to build a successful career in the Netherlands.

Would you like to know which vacancies match your situation?
