Are you coming to the Netherlands to work? Then you need a BSN. Without this number, you can’t receive a salary, get health insurance, or open a bank account here. The BSN is therefore one of the first things you need to arrange, and fortunately, you’re not alone in this. In this blog, we explain what the BSN is, why you need it, and how Charlie works helps you with this.
What is a BSN?
BSN stands for the Citizen Service Number. This is a unique personal identification number that everyone in the Netherlands receives upon registering with a municipality. It is comparable to the social security number or national identification number in other countries.
Your BSN is used by government agencies, healthcare providers, tax authorities, employers, and banks to process your data safely and correctly. So it’s more than just an administrative number; it’s your official access to all kinds of regulatory matters in the Netherlands. Want to know what else you need to arrange when you come to the Netherlands? Then read this page.
Why Do You Need a BSN?
Without a BSN, you can’t arrange many official matters in the Netherlands. For example:
- Receiving your salary from your employer;
- Taking out health insurance (mandatory in the Netherlands);
- Opening a bank account;
- Filing tax returns;
- Using medical care.
If you come to work at Charlie works, we’ll make sure you can apply for a BSN as quickly as possible. We usually schedule an appointment directly with the municipality where you’ll be living or working. This way, you don’t have to figure anything out yourself and you avoid delays in your work or payment.
How Do You Apply for a BSN?
To get a BSN, you must register with a Dutch municipality. This is called a BRP registration (Personal Records Database). You do this at the town hall of the place where you’re staying. We often plan this appointment for you as soon as you arrive in the Netherlands.
During the registration, you bring the following:
- A valid passport or ID card;
- Your employment contract or a statement from your employer;
- A rental agreement or confirmation of your residential address (for example, through Charlie works).
After registration, you usually receive your BSN immediately during the appointment or shortly after by mail. Once you have this number, you can arrange everything else: from your health insurance to your bank account.
