Working shifts means you work at varying times, sometimes early in the morning, late in the evening, or even in the middle of the night. There’s naturally something in return: shift allowance. But what exactly is that? How much extra do you get paid? And when are you entitled to it? In this blog, we explain it all, so you know exactly where you stand.
What is Shift Allowance?
Shift allowance is an extra compensation on top of your normal hourly wage. You receive this allowance because you work irregular hours, for example, in the evenings, at night, or on weekends. The idea behind shift allowance is simple: work that falls outside standard 9-to-5 hours is physically and socially more demanding. That’s why you receive extra pay for it. The amount of the allowance depends on the collective labor agreement (CAO) or company regulations.
When Do You Receive Shift Allowance?
You are entitled to shift allowance if you:
- Work according to an official shift schedule;
- Work outside regular daytime hours (often before 6:00 AM or after 6:00 PM);
- Or work on weekends or public holidays.
So you do not receive an allowance if you occasionally work a late shift, but you do if you consistently work in a shift system. Do you work through Charlie works? Then you will always be informed beforehand if allowances apply and how much they are.
How much is the Average Allowance?
The amount of shift allowance varies per employer, sector, and collective labor agreement. But generally, you can expect:
- Evening shift (after 6:00 PM): often 25% extra
- Night shift (after 10:00 PM or 12:00 AM): up to 40% or more
- Weekend shifts: 50% on Saturdays, sometimes 100% on Sundays
- Public holidays: usually 100% or even more
Note: these are indications. The exact percentages depend on your contract, collective labor agreement, or agreements with your employer. Through Charlie works, we always inform you clearly about this before you start.
Why is Shift Allowance Interesting?
For many people, shift allowance is an important reason to choose this way of working. The benefits:
- You consistently earn more without working extra hours;
- You build up savings faster or have more left over per month;
- In some cases, allowances also count towards your pension accrual.
Do note that shift work can be physically and mentally more demanding. Good sleep, healthy eating, and sufficient rest are therefore extra important.
