Are you going to work in the Netherlands? Then it is important that you know what you should earn at a minimum and what allowances you can apply for. In this blog, we explain how the minimum wage works in 2026, what rules apply, and how allowances can supplement your income. If you work through Charlie works, we will not only help you find work, but also with everything else that comes with it.
What is the minimum wage in the Netherlands?
The minimum wage is the legal minimum that an employer must pay you. Since 2024, the Netherlands has had a minimum wage per hour, and this will remain the case in 2026.
This means that you are paid per hour worked, that the minimum wage applies to everyone from the age of 21, and that young people under the age of 21 fall under the youth wage. The government usually adjusts the minimum wage twice a year. You can always find the current amounts via the information about the minimum wage from the national government.
Minimum wage in the Netherlands per age (youth wage)
Are you younger than 21 years old? Then the youth minimum wage applies. This is a percentage of the adult minimum wage and differs per age. Because these amounts change regularly, it is important to check this carefully. You can find an up-to-date overview on the UWV page about the youth wage per age.
If you work through Charlie works, we will ensure that you are always paid correctly according to the applicable rules.
What is on your payslip?
Your payslip shows exactly how your salary is structured. This includes your gross salary, the tax and premiums withheld, your holiday pay (usually 8 percent), any allowances, and the net salary that you receive in your bank account.
Do you have doubts about your payslip or do you not understand everything on it? We are happy to explain this to you. In our blog about the most important rights of foreign employees you can read what you are entitled to as an employee.
Allowances: extra financial support
In addition to your salary, you may be entitled to allowances in the Netherlands. These are contributions from the government to keep fixed costs affordable, especially when your income is not very high.
Healthcare allowance
Healthcare allowance is a monthly contribution towards your health insurance. On the Belastingdienst website, you can read exactly how healthcare allowance works and when you are eligible for it. You can also find more information about healthcare and insurance in our blog about which insurances are mandatory in the Netherlands.

When are you entitled to allowances?
You can apply for allowances when you have a BSN, live or work in the Netherlands, your income remains below the set limit and you have Dutch health insurance. You need a DigiD for many applications. Are you not yet registered with the municipality? Then first read how registering with the municipality in the Netherlands works.
Please note: allowances and repayment
Allowances are calculated based on an estimate of your income. If your work changes or you start earning more, you may have to repay part of it. Therefore, always report changes to the Tax Authorities in time.
Minimum wage and allowances together
For many foreign employees, a combination of minimum wage and allowances provides more financial security. Especially in the first months in the Netherlands, allowances can make a big difference.
What do you need to arrange to receive salary and allowances?
In order to work, get paid and apply for allowances, you need to register with the municipality, a BSN, a Dutch bank account and Dutch health insurance. In our blog about how long documents are valid in the Netherlands, you can read what you need to take into account.
