Do you work in logistics in the Netherlands? If so, there is a good chance you work in shifts. Distribution centers and warehouses often operate day and night. This means working in morning, evening, and night shifts. For many employees, this takes some getting used to, but shift work also offers benefits, such as extra allowances and more flexibility.
In this blog, we explain how logistics shifts work, what you can expect, and which allowances apply.
Why do people work in shifts?
The logistics sector is all about speed and continuity. Webshops, supermarkets, and companies want products to be delivered quickly. That is why many distribution centers work with multiple shifts per day. This allows work to continue without interruption.
By working in shifts, companies can plan more efficiently and processes continue to run smoothly. For employees, this means that various working hours are possible.
Morning shift
The morning shift usually starts early, often between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM. Your workday then ends in the afternoon, for example around 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM. Advantages of the morning shift are that you are free in the afternoon and still have time for personal matters. It can take some getting used to waking up early, especially if you are not used to it. In many cases, no extra allowance applies for a standard morning shift unless you start before 6:00 AM. This varies by employer and collective labor agreement (CAO).
Evening shift
The evening shift usually starts in the afternoon, for example around 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM, and continues until late in the evening, sometimes until 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM. Many employees find the evening shift pleasant because you have time for appointments or rest during the day. Additionally, in many logistics roles, an allowance applies for hours worked in the evening. The amount of this allowance depends on the collective labor agreement and the agreements within the company.
Night shift
The night shift is usually from about 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This is physically and mentally more demanding than working during the day because you are working against your natural rhythm. Therefore, a higher allowance almost always applies for night shifts. This allowance can be as much as 150 percent of the normal hourly wage or even higher, depending on the collective labor agreement. Working at night requires discipline. Sleeping well during the day and having a fixed routine are important to sustain this. For some employees, the night shift is attractive because of the higher salary.
How does shift work work?
In many logistics companies, you do not always work the same shift. For example, you might work a morning shift one week and an evening shift the next. This is also known as a two-shift or three-shift system. In a two-shift system, you usually alternate between morning and evening. In a three-shift system, the night shift is also included. Employers often announce schedules well in advance. This way, you know in time when you have to work. It is important to be flexible, but also to plan well. What do allowances mean for your salary?
Allowances can make a big difference in your monthly income. If you regularly work in the evening or at night, your total salary can be significantly higher than if you only work during the day. Your payslip shows exactly how much allowance you receive and for which hours it is calculated. Don’t quite understand your payslip? Then it is always wise to have it explained. Which shift suits you?
Not everyone feels comfortable with the same working hours. Some people prefer to work early and like to have their afternoons free. Others find it nice to have peace and quiet during the day and start later. Night shifts especially suit people who can handle irregular hours and have no trouble with a different sleep rhythm. It is important to look at yourself honestly and choose what fits your situation.
