If you want to work in logistics, there’s a possibility you’ll be working in shifts. But what exactly does that mean? What does such a shift look like? And why do companies use a shift system? In this blog, we’ll explain it step by step, so you can start working in logistics well-prepared.

What is Shift Work?

Shift work is a work schedule where multiple teams alternate at fixed times. This ensures that work in a warehouse, distribution center, or factory continues throughout the day and sometimes even 24 hours a day.

Instead of having everyone work simultaneously from 9 to 5, a company divides the work into shifts. For example, you might work a week of morning shifts, followed by a week of evening shifts, with days off in between.

Why is Shift Work Used?

In logistics, work often needs to be fast, efficient, and continuous. Think of packing online orders, stocking stores, or processing deliveries. Many companies therefore also want to continue working in the evening, at night, or on weekends.

With shift work:

  • You don’t lose valuable time between shifts;
  • Deadlines can be met more effectively and;
  • Warehouse capacity is maximized.

What Types of Shift Systems are there?

There are different shift systems. The most common are:

  • Two-shift system: early and late shift (e.g., 6:00 AM–2:00 PM and 2:00 PM–10:00 PM)
  • Three-shift system: early, late, and night shift (e.g., 6:00 AM–2:00 PM, 2:00 PM–10:00 PM, 10:00 PM–6:00 AM)

Which system you follow depends on the company you work for. You often receive a schedule in advance that clearly shows when you work and when you are off.

What Does a Workday in Shift Work Look like?

That depends on the shift. For example:

  • Morning shift (6:00 AM–2:00 PM): you start early and are already done by the afternoon. Many people appreciate this due to the free time later in the day.
  • Late shift (2:00 PM–10:00 PM): you have the morning off, but work until the evening.
  • Night shift (10:00 PM–6:00 AM): you work while most people sleep. This requires extra attention to rest and nutrition, but you usually receive a higher allowance for it.

Often you work the same shift for several consecutive days, after which the schedule changes.

Do You get Extra Pay for Shift Work?

Yes, that’s an important advantage. Those who work outside standard hours (such as evenings, nights, or weekends) usually receive a shift allowance. This allowance is paid on top of your hourly wage. The amount of the allowance depends on the time, the CAO (Collective Labor Agreement), and your employer.

This way, working in shifts can be financially attractive, especially if you regularly work irregular shifts.

Is Shift Work for You?

Shift work is not equally easy for everyone, but many people appreciate the variety, the extra pay, and the free time during the day. However, it’s important that you:

  • Are flexible with your schedule;
  • Can adapt well to changing rhythms and;
  • Get enough rest.

If you keep that in mind, working in shifts is sustainable, even in the long term.
