Your first day at work in a new country, at a new company, and in a sector you might not be familiar with can be exciting. Especially in production, where processes move quickly and efficiency is important, you want to know what to expect. Fortunately, many production companies in the Netherlands provide a clear and structured onboarding process. In this blog, we explain what the initial period looks like and how to start well-prepared.
What Exactly is Onboarding?
Onboarding is the process where you, as a new employee, are gradually prepared for your job. It starts even before you step onto the work floor: you receive information about the company, your role, working hours, and safety rules. This is followed by an orientation process where you are guided by colleagues or a team leader.
The goal of onboarding is simple: to ensure you quickly feel at home and know what to do.
1. Introduction on your first day
On your first day, you get acquainted with your work environment and your team. You receive explanations about:
- The tasks you will be doing;
- The rules on the work floor (think of safety and hygiene);
- Break times, working hours, and shifts;
- Where to store your belongings and change clothes.
You usually get a tour and a brief explanation of the machines or processes you will be working with. The atmosphere is often practical and direct, with no long meetings, but clear explanations and personal guidance.
2. Training on the work floor
In the first few days, you work alongside an experienced colleague or team leader. You observe, practice yourself, and receive direct feedback. Tasks are explained step by step, so you can get used to the pace and actions without pressure. This training process usually lasts a few days to a week, depending on the complexity of your tasks. In production companies, it’s all about precision, neat work, and collaboration, which you learn best by just doing it.
3. Safety always comes first
In production, you often work with machines, tools, or products that need to be handled carefully. That’s why during your onboarding, you receive explanations about:
- Safety instructions;
- Protective clothing (such as hairnets, gloves, or safety shoes);
- What to do in case of a malfunction or emergency.
Working through Charlie works? We ensure you receive these rules in advance, often in your own language, so you are well-prepared.
4. Guidance in your language where possible
For many migrant workers, the Dutch language is still new. That’s why many production companies, including Charlie works, offer multilingual guidance. You often receive instructions, documents, and explanations in English, but it’s also possible that your supervisor speaks Polish, Romanian, or another language you understand.
Do you have questions? There is always someone available to help you. So you’re never alone.
5. Evaluation and contact moments
After a few days or weeks, there is often a short evaluation moment. How is it going? Do you have any questions? Do you understand all the tasks well? This is also the time to discuss any issues.
At Charlie works, we are always ready to help if something is unclear. Your fixed contact person is available for questions about your work, schedule, salary, CAO, or accommodation.
Why Good Onboarding is so Important
A good start leads to more job satisfaction, fewer mistakes, and higher productivity. But most importantly: you feel comfortable more quickly. And that’s exactly what Charlie works is all about, ensuring you can work with confidence.
